The History of Rent - 1852 Words
Land has been necessary for human survival since early civilization. Man has used rent in order to produce vital items for survival. Land has served as the backbone for producing clothing, food, and a place of living. We may take advantage of these commodities that wouldnââ¬â¢t have been possible if it wasnââ¬â¢t for land. Land holds great contribution to humankind and has played a great part in many generations before us. The hunter-gatherer role is a simple example of how man has used land as a tool for his own growth. Rent was created out of the need for land. Rent has been around before any economic theory was used to theorize it. The Latin word rendita was used to refer to a return (Keiper, 1961, p.3). The first theory of rent was seen in the late seventeenth century. The mercantilist economists created some central theories to theorize rent even though it wasnââ¬â¢t one of their more important worries. The history of the theory of rent can start with the mercantilists. Sir William Petty, one of the first major contributors to the mercantilistsââ¬â¢ theory of rent, can accredit a lot of his work to the influences of Thomas Hobbes. His first major contribution in 1662, A Treatise on Taxes and Contributions, refers to rent as a net return on land used for livestock and agriculture. He explains: Suppose a man could with his own hands plant a certain scope of land with corn, that is, could dig, or plough, harrow, weed, reap, carry home, thresh, and winnow so much as the husbandry of thisShow MoreRelatedThe Other Civil War1176 Words à |à 5 PagesThe Other Civil War If we read deep into Zinns A Peoples history of the United States, we may find details into our American DNA. Food Stamp Cuts Justified or Unjustified Essay - 619 Words
Recent cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Aid Program (S.N.A.P.), also known as the U.S. Food Stamp Program, have become extremely controversial. Whether Congress was wrong to reduce funding to the program remains a question. There are two principles that may be used to represent each side of this debate. The difference principle will be used to represent those who believe the program cuts were unjustified and the harm principle will be used to represent those who believe the program cuts were justified. Those who are against the cuts to the Food Stamp Program can argue that under the difference principle, Congress was wrong to reduce funding. The difference principle, created by John Rawls, states that an inequality in a society, such asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The harm principle was created by an English philosopher and writer named John Stuart Mill. The principle states that a government should only intervene to prevent someone from harming another. A harm is defined as an a ction in which someone causes someone else to lose something of value. Hunger in the U.S., according to the harm principle, is not a harm. Food insecure people are not hungry because others are taking away their food; they are hungry because they cannot afford or do not have access to food. Because hunger is not a harm, the government should not be intervening in the situation. Congress is not justified in using peopleââ¬â¢s tax dollars to create a Food Stamp Program, however they are justified in cutting the funding to the program. By cutting S.N.A.P. funding Congress is also not inflicting any direct harm to people. Congress is not taking away money that the programââ¬â¢s recipients already had; it is making a cut in the money that the recipients would receive. Since there are no harms being done in the hunger situation, either by Congress or by people in the U.S., Congressââ¬â¢s actions were justified. In my opinion Congress was wrong to cut S.N.A.P. benefits. Although C ongress did not inflict any direct harm to the beneficiaries of S.N.A.P, it did inflict indirect harm. This is a moral problem because people who depended on money from the program will not have enough money to eatShow MoreRelatedTheme in Literature Essay4725 Words à |à 19 Pagesdied, many of them innocent civilians.
